The Stanton Special
In 1957 Weltex supplied an all-enveloping modified Mistral body for the 6.1 litre Gypsy Major aircraft mid-engined Stanton Special. The aim was to attempt New Zealand speed records. Maurice Stanton built the original "Crop Duster" special in 1954 and with the streamlined Weltex body installed, the Stanton did the standing quarter mile in 13.96 seconds and the flying quarter mile at 207kph. Later, fitted with an Arnott supercharger and four Amal carbs, these figures were improved to to 12.96s and 248kph or 178.4 MPH!
This car is still occasionally seen racing in historic events but has reverted to it's original "boxy" 1954 body,
