Australian Mistrals
Australian Mistrals
Mistral bodies were also made under licence in Australia by Keith Morrison of Sydney. Here they were known as the KM 300, and there was also a KM200 with a different style body. The KM300 bodies had the later Mistral design with the single side louvre. A tubular chassis was commonly fitted featuring Holden independent suspension. The "Grey" Holden engine, along with other makes, were also used. At least eight, possibly more KM300's, were built and they were widely used in competition. Most of these photos and information has come from the Facebook page Old Motor Racing Photographs - Australia .

1958 KM300, one of eight built by Keith Morrison in 1958, of which most are still around. It features a 1500cc MGA engine with spares. It is a pretty car that makes all of the right sounds. Formally owed by Dick Willis.

Asper 20TR3. It's a one-off made by Geoff Taylor, who based his creation on a two-year old Triumph TR3 and used a KM300 body, made by Fiberglass Cars Australia Company of Concord, New South Wales. A Judson compressor was added to the two-litre mechanicals and the car was campaigned heavily throughout the 1960s, mostly by racer Geoff Munyard. It was only in 1993 that the car was restored to its original condition by a man named Peter Kleineberg, also in Australia. How it ended up in Switzerland remains unknown to us.

I owned and raced a KM300 in the 1960’s in Tasmania (Australia). My car had the Triumph TR3 engine and transmission with overdrive. Our car had a specially built space frame chassis and VW front suspension and an Austin A50 rear axle.
I sold the car in 1966 and have been unable to track where it has finished up.
This KM300 Mistral has a tubular chassis with Holden independent front suspension and a "grey" Holden engine with Repco cross flow head, triple carburettors and Repco crank big end caps. From Guy Thomson of Newcastle

This Mistral, with Alfa Romeo running gear, was painted yellow and photographed "for sale" at a Skope Classic race meeting at Ruapuna Park in New Zealand in 2008. It appears it was sold to an owner in Australia who has painted it red and continues to race the car there.
